How to keep skin healthy in winter

Winter brings a wonderland of snow, cosy jumpers, and hot chocolate by the fire. But often, the challenges of dry, flaky winter skin are not far behind. The cold and dry air can even leave skin painful, but with the right care, skin can feel radiant all winter long. Here are a few tips to beat the winter skin blues:

  1. Stay hydrated

In the colder months, it’s easy to forget the importance of hydration, but drinking plenty of water is crucial for maintaining skin moisture from the inside, out. Try herbal teas or warm water with a squeeze of lemon for something hydrating and comforting at the same time.

  2. Cleanse gently

Avoid long, hot showers and baths and try lukewarm water, especially on the face, which is much less harsh on the skin. Some cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils too, so look for a gentle, fragrance-free product that won’t irritate or further dehydrate the skin.

  3. Moisturise regularly

Choose skincare products that help to prevent water from evaporating from the skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerine keep in the moisture and create a protective barrier against the harsh elements. Don’t forget to apply moisturiser after showering to seal in the water.

  4. Don't over exfoliate

Regular exfoliation can help to remove dead skin cells, but do this gently and not too often in winter. Use a mild exfoliating scrub or a product containing urea to remove dry skin without causing irritation.

  5. Don't neglect the lips

Chapped lips are common in winter. Keep lips soft by applying a nourishing lip balm. Look for products with shea butter, beeswax or lanolin for best results.

  6. Remember sunscreen

Even in winter, the sun can be potent, and snow reflects UV rays, increasing exposure. Choose a broad-spectrum suncream with SPF 30 or higher and apply to any exposed skin when heading outdoors

Everyone’s skin is different, so it may take some trial and error to find the best routine and products for your skin. But bear with it, your skin will thank you for the extra care and attention.
